Transmission - Noise Variation (2024)

This project began with my long-standing sensitivity to sound and developed into an exploration of how noise can be experienced differently through material. Inspired by the principle of resonance found in sources of sound such as cicadas, I focused on the relationship between the volume and form of a resonating chamber and its influence on an object's natural frequency and timbre. Three speakers with different resonating chambers were constructed so that the same audio signal produced distinct tonal qualities depending on the chamber's volume, form, and surface texture. Rather than treating noise as a fixed phenomenon, the work explores how material conditions transform auditory perception.

A single measure of music was also translated into light using the waveform, the angles of 120 pieces of glass, and their optical properties. By converting sound into another sensory medium, the work investigates how the same stimulus can be perceived differently through different materials.
